Required Skilled migrants for Western Australia’s Resource Sector

Western Australia’s Chamber of Mineral and Energy [CME] stated that resource sector in Western Australia has shortage of skilled workers and need huge number of skilled overseas migrants to fulfill this gap.  Nearly 30,000-34,000 new skilled workers will be hired by the end of this year, said Reg Howard-Smith, CEO of CME. Howard Smith said, "To provide some context, the total resources sector workforce is currently more than 85,000 direct employees, when only five years ago this figure was 44,000 people," "If you consider that for every one direct employee, there could be up to four indirect employees, you get a sense of the challenge facing the sector and the state," he added. Howard- Smith recommended 3 steps for targeting skill shortage:

  • To ensure that trained work force is developed & maintained
  •  Rising the involvement of underrepresented groups, i.e. women & local people
  • To ensure the admittance of skilled workers
Overseas skilled workers have many options for migrating to Australia such as:
  • Independent Skilled Migration [Do not need offer letter from employer]
  • Employer Sponsored  Temporary Migration
Skilled migrants entered to Australia under these categories will be allowed to apply for Permanent Residence. Hence migrants can permanently live and work in Australia.
