Australia gets almost 30% of its migrants from India and China
First time ever, India outweighed all other countries, in terms of the no. of Indians who have migrated to Australia, with China on the second position. According to Mr. Chris Bowen, Australian immigration minister, Indians comprised of 15.7% or 29,018 of all the migrants in Australia this year. The second largest source of immigration, were Chinese immigrants contributing 13.8% or 25,509 people. Followed by India and China, was UK with 25,274 migrations to Australia.
Australian employers, especially those in mining, have requested the government to fill in for skill shortage by increasing the no. of immigrants in Australia. As compared to 185,000 in 2011/12, government plans to have 190,000 immigrants in 2012/13.
Of 29,018 Indian immigrants from India, over 2/3rd of them, making a no. of 125,755 migrated to Australia under Skilled migrant Visa Category. Skilled migration facilitates Australian Economy and helps overcome the problem of ‘ageing population’, as stated by Mr. Bowen, Australian immigration minister. This skilled stream bends towards Skilled Sponsored visa category with 60% visas, where applicants are sponsored mainly by companies, and also states and territories, to fill in the skill shortage gaps.
